What does Prada mean? Here’s everything you need to know buckled Prada bags, including how to clean Prada nylon bag and how to tell if a Prada bag is real

What does Prada mean?

Prada's cat-eye sunglasses Prada is named after its founders: brothers Mario and Martino Prada. In 1913, the two opened a leather goods shop in Milan, Italy, under the name Fratelli Prada. Since then, Prada handbags have been a symbol of taste and style for women worldwide.

And what makes these bags so special? Their impeccable quality, timeless designs, and originality. Yes, with Prada, timelessness and originality go hand in hand: the luxury label is keeping up with the latest trends, while reintroducing classic designs at the same time.

With the recent Re-Edition collection, the label is bringing back all the brand’s most beloved designs from the years 2000, 2005, and 2006, including the Nylon 2000 mini-bag, which we’re sure you’ve seen on the arms of Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner.

The History of Prada Nylon

Prada has a long-standing association with nylon. It was Mario’s granddaughter, Miuccia, who first introduced this fabric after inheriting the company in 1978.

“Back then,” she told 10 Magazine, “I didn’t really like anything I saw. It all just looked so old and bourgeois and boring. I just wanted to search for the absolute opposite of what was already out there.” So, Miuccia experimented, launching a waterproof backpack in Pocono nylon in 1984. Following its success, Prada started using nylon for bags and clothing alike, making it one of the brand’s trademarks.

The brand partnered with Italian textile yarn producer Aquafil, which has developed a sustainable nylon: Econyl. Econyl is made of upcycled materials, such as fishing nets, discarded nylon, and industrial waste, and can be recycled repeatedly, without affecting the quality of the material. The brand hopes to convert all of its virgin nylon usage to Re-Nylon by the end of 2021.

“This project highlights our continued efforts towards promoting a responsible business,” says Lorenzo Bertelli, Miuccia’s son and Prada’s Marketing Director. “This collection allows us to make our contribution and create products without using new resources.”

How to Clean Prada Nylon Bag

Prada bags are water and scratch resistant. Nonetheless, if you want to ensure their longevity, a good cleaning is in order. So, how to clean Prada nylon bag?

Nylon: If you own a Prada nylon bag, make sure you read the cleaning instructions. You can usually find the tag attached to the lining or in the documentation that comes with the bag. If there is a W, it means you can safely use water on the purse. In this case, you can wipe the surface of the bag with a wet towel.

For a more thorough cleaning, you can put your bag in the washing machine on the most delicate cycle. Make sure you use a cool or cold water setting, and air dry it afterwards.

Saffiano leather: Again, make sure you read the instruction tag. Saffiano leather can be easily cleaned by wiping the surface of the bag with a damp cloth, and, if you’re struggling to remove dirt and dust from the cross-hatch pattern, you can help yourself with a soft toothbrush. If your bag is stained, you can use a leather cleaner, but make sure you test it on a small spot before proceeding on the whole bag.

How to tell if a Prada bag is real

How to tell if a Prada bag is real?

First off, check the dust bag and authenticity card. Typically, women’s Prada bags come in a white dust bag with the logo printed in black, and every bag comes with an authenticity card. The authenticity card contains the bag’s serial number and style information, and depending on where it was purchased, a stamp with the name of the boutique.

Then, examine the logo: the inverted triangle should be securely fastened to the bag, and the writing should be clearly legible. Check the inner plaque as well, and make sure you look for the curve in the “R” – if the right leg of the “R” is completely straight, it’s a giveaway that the bag is fake.
