History & Design:

In 2018, Charlotte Lee began designing what would then become the New Balance 327. Before taking a peak behind the scenes during her internship at Clarks, Lee had no affinity or attachment to sneakers and the culture that surrounded them. After being swallowed up by her interest in footwear design, an eight-year period of studying whizzed by before landing a job at New Balance in 2014.

This lack of bias towards footwear helped Lee during the design process, giving her an outside perspective to create ideas. Delving into the archives, she wasn’t immediately enamoured with any particular models and took time to understand how to channel the brand’s rich history. Remaining patient with the creative process, Lee was keen to discover a balance between the old and new world of footwear.

The process would then begin, the NB 327’s large sidewall logo inspired by the 320, a silhouette from ‘76 that was the first to debut a large “N” logo and the first ever numbered New Balance. The circular lugs on the outsole were taken from the Trail 355, while the tread pattern looked to the Super Comp from 77 for grip. Lee then decided to veer away from the brand’s usual grey palette, instead choosing to embrace the bright colours that she came across while studying the ‘70s archive pieces. She also opted out of using ENCAP and ABZORB cushioning, focusing on the 327’s lightweight and streamlined traits for a modern finish.

Recognising the beauty of old footwear in combination with her fresh design perspective, the 327 arrived with a contemporary twist. Hitting the shelves in April 2020, it wouldn’t be long till a collaboration with French-Moroccan fashion house, Casablanca, would grab everyone’s attention during Paris Fashion Week. With the NB 327 now in the spotlight, the silhouette would go on to have a huge two-year run, along with other New Balance models such as the 550 and 2002 which would only boost the brand’s reputation.

The tenis new balance 574 verde marrom is worth mentioning twice as it remains a pivotal part of the silhouette’s speedy journey on centre stage. Other notable collaborations came from Levi’s in 2020, with a denim-inspired capsule that highlighted the 327’s streamlined tooling and maximal “N” branding. UK-based retailer size? also delivered two colourful editions that celebrated the shoe’s ‘70s roots and had a strong presence throughout the summer of 2020.

While the 327 has somewhat slowed down in demand compared to upcoming New Balance silhouettes, it remains a wardrobe staple with more future excitement yet to come.
