Introduced all the way back in 1991 is the Beaverton-based sportswear label's glass Nike Air Huarache trainers. It was designed by none other than legendary Nike employee Tinker Hatfield - who is globally known for his renowned Air Max sneakers - alongside founder of fragment design Hiroshi Fujiwara and former Nike chief executive officer Mark Parker also contributed significantly.
Traditionally crafted from a neoprene-based upper and tumbled leather textiles that come in the form of an exoskeleton caging from heel to toe and complete with a Phylon midsole underfoot, the Air Huarache was acknowledged for its sock-like fit that almost feels like your feet are being hugged. Overall this gave the wearer comfort and cushioning that you won't experience from any other running shoes on the market, thanks to all the aforementioned features. Branding is kept to a minimal with "NIKE" embossed on a rubber asos that wraps around the back heel, and a circular Air Huarache emblem that's stamped onto the tongue.
Just like the Swoosh brand's timeless models such as the nike air max leo pack wholesale store locations and Michael Jordan's signature Nike Air Jordan 1 basketball sneakers, numerous colorways of the Huarache started to roll out as the silhouette gradually paved it's way to the streetwear scene. The Huarache "Scream Green" was one of the first OG colourways to ever grace the Huaraches, a vibrant green hue joined with bold blue and stark black accents, it was an immediate head-turner on the streets when it launched to the masses in 1991. This variant was then reissued in 1999, 2014, and is now planned for a grand retro comeback in 2021 to celebrate its 30th anniversary.
As for collaborations, Nike is unquestionably on top of the game. In 2000, Nike unveiled the Stüssy x Nike Air Huarache LE "Desert Oak" and "Dark Olive" which marked their first-ever partnership with Shawn Stussy’s world-famous skateboard brand. Needless to say, both colourways surprisingly returned in early 2021 and gave sneakerheads, who weren't around during the first release date, a chance to get their hands on a pair.
As with most Nike models, new variants of the Air Huarache were also developed over the years; the Huarache Run Ultra, Flight Huarache, and Huarache Light just to name a few. Though all these renditions went off our radar the past several years, including the original Air Huarache, it appears that they are back on the streets and is already creating a huge hype in the modern sneaker community.
