Markgong FW24 Is Chic — and 'The musician even experiments with her' Inspired

Markgong showcases its Fall/Winter 2024 collection at Shanghai Fashion Week. The musician even experiments with her fans: We found the collection for you. Ringing in the New Year solo is a sore subject and for SATC's Miranda who was newly single, loneliness was all she could think of. That was until her chaotic best friend Carrie Bradshaw hopped on the subway -- yes the same woman who would hail a taxi across all five boroughs -- just to make sure she could whisper "You’re not alone," in her friend's ear as the clock struck 12.The moment was a tear-jerker for us, and clearly for Markgong's founder Mark Gong who created an entire collection about its lore. Known for theatrics, Gong also explored SATC last season with none other than our sex-positive TV bestie, Samantha Jones. Now, Gong returns to Shanghai Fashion Week with a chic collection that emulates Carrie's "roll out of bed to cater to her bestie," aesthetic. Fit with bras over clothes, cell phones on speaker and sleeping masks paired with Carrie's favorite furs, the collection keeps fashion "fun," as Gong shared backstage. For those not on the go, Markgong tapped this season's love of leather and lace through structured leather suits, chokers that doubled as body jewelry and lace tights for added allure.View the chaotic and chic collection above. In other news, Mia Khalifa merges style and sex-positivity.

A Masterclass in Sex Appeal: Mia Khalifa Merges Style and Sex Positivity

With over 27 million followers and fashion week appearances that even your fav couldn’t get a seat to, Mia Khalifa is undoubtedly becoming fashion’s favorite It girl. From dominating adult entertainment discussions – despite only performing for three months – to foraying into fashion with a sex-positive allure, Khalifa is on her way to becoming a household name.In a world where sex work, especially porn, is so highly consumed, you would think a woman like Khalifa would constantly be receiving her flowers. I mean, the looks are to die for, and she’s slowly becoming the muse – cue her fronting Marc Jacobs' Heaven campaign and closing KNWLS SS24 runway presentation. As she said, "My bag, shoe and archival collection would gag a lot of you in your tracks I'm not going to lie... no stylist, just a first dibs account and a dream."But take a look at any of her comment sections, and I guarantee there’s a slew of misogynistic men eager to "humble" her for being hot and in style. Literally every time we post her, we have to dish out content moderation time to drag misogynistic f-cks. The worst part is that there’s no denying the hatred stems from every incels inner conflict: the desire for her – a woman society tells them they should jack off to and never respect – and the reality that she’ll never want them. All the while, Khalifa dominates style discussions and continues to build a sex-positive empire. From private YSL and Off-White™ fittings to custom looks and closing shows, she’s given the girls so much inspo that she’s dominating mood boards. So much so, her name has become a click-bait tactic for publications worldwide -- and this is something we see often. People shame those in the sex work industry, but pull inspiration of course, without giving women like Khalifa their flowers. Unfortunately, shame is ingrained in every layer of our experience as women, because well... the patriarchy makes it its point to do so. Because of this, Khalifa donning high fashion at shows these hoes can’t even get into, gives self-hating women enough fuel to disparage her online. As a former sex worker myself, Khalifa’s journey from adult entertainment to now, is inspiring to say the least. Despite what the world has to say, she continues to honor the spicier parts of herself – she just knows not to do it amongst those who disparage her. In an interview with El Pais she spoke on why she has an OnlyFans, despite no longer wanting to associate with porn. "I do things my own way on there, there’s no nudity, I don’t do what people expect when they get on there. I post fun, beautiful pictures that make me feel empowered… It also makes me feel powerful to block people who say rude things to me,” she added. "It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to say no" or "Fuck off."This quote is powerful because she’s not shaming sex work now that she's left the industry, as this can leave women in the industry feeling further ostracized and ashamed. Or, as if they can only succeed by ditching a piece of themselves. She keeps it real without disparaging the industry and says that porn simply wasn't empowering for her. "I also don’t say the thing about not doing nudity on OnlyFans in a pretentious way or to be better than others. Sometimes I don’t like to say it, actually, because I feel like some people might interpret that I’m saying I’m better than those who do, and it’s not that at all.” So instead, she’s created a community where she can safely and creatively express her sensual nature and make a bag off of it. Now that, is how you honor yourself."My bag, shoe and archival collection would gag a lot of you in your tracks"Now, Khalifa praises her sex-positive edge by bringing her sex appeal to highly-acclaimed deals. As of 2023, she's starring in a new campaign almost every week while running her jewelry brand, Sheytan. "The brand is for the girl who wears lingerie just for her," she told us at the time of its launch. "It’s the girl who wears perfume, even when she’s home alone. It makes you feel sexy and makes you feel more powerful."From front row sightings to humanitarian efforts like Ainas fragrances will launch on April 2 on the – she’s serving a masterclass in sex appeal, while also being for the people.A Seat at the Table:Most importantly, Khalifa's It girl era opens the door for countless fashion-obsessed-sex-workers. In celebration of Muslim Women's Day on March 27, we caught up with Amani Al-Khatahtbeh, the founder of Muslim Girl, alongside a dominatrix, was tapped to model one of the kinky runway looks.

Amani's journey in activism and advocacy for Muslim women's rights began at a young age and her work has made significant strides in reshaping narratives and promoting inclusivity worldwide. With recent achievements like being offered a seat at Oxford for International Human Rights Law, Amani continues to be a beacon of empowerment and inspiration for women worldwide.

In this exclusive interview, Amani delves into her experiences, aspirations and insights into the intersection of feminism, Islam and activism in today's world.

You have now been offered a seat at Oxford for International Human Rights Law. What do you hope to do with your degree?

It feels surreal as the granddaughter of survivors from Deir Yassin, Palestine, to have the opportunity to study human rights at Oxford, especially at a time when it's more relevant than ever before. I never imagined that my first term studying international human rights law would coincide with a real-time case study of my people. I accepted my seat in the program without hesitation because it represents the natural progression of our work. Muslim Girl was launched as a Muslim-owned media platform with the intention of reclaiming our narratives, eliminating stereotypes and promoting tolerance and understanding, so that we can influence the policies shaping our lives.

Your journey in activism and advocating for Muslim women's rights and social justice began when you were just a teenager. How do you feel about this moment in your evolution?

I deleted all of my 1000+ Instagram posts to recalibrate and focus on what's truly important. There's no way I can feel anything except that I can never be the same person again. My mother passed away in July and then the Palestinian genocide erupted less than three months later. Simultaneously, I made this huge career move into a completely new field, never imagining that all of these events would coincide at the same time. I'm now living a completely different life from what I was just six months ago and it's not entirely in line with what I had planned on my vision board. However, the timing of everything feels like it happened for a reason. I feel like I'm awakening to my real purpose and there's no turning back.

How do you envision your relationship with fashion evolving to align with today's world?

When I designed my adidas Originals capsule collection, it marked the first time a major athletic brand featured a product with keffiyeh patterns and the colors of the Palestine flag. It was crucial to me that our collaboration shattered barriers in an industry often guilty of cultural appropriation. Adidas was a powerful partner and empowered my styling and creative direction, allowing the collection to authentically reflect my vision.

We're living in the most fast-paced world ever, where social media often fosters a sense of constantly chasing trends and temporary algorithmic highs to stay relevant. Personally, I find little meaning in this pursuit if it lacks purpose. What's the value of being the most technology-fluent and connected generation if we fail to utilize it for meaningful ends? Today's youth seeks to support brands that stand for something beyond profit. Whether it's in sourcing, sustainability, ethical labor practices or other aspects, our fashion choices are inherently political in today's world.

What role do you think online platforms should play in advancing the causes you support and amplify?

One of the hottest topics right now is digital censorship. I'm proud that, with Muslim Girl , we've been advocating for our voices on a global scale. One initiative we've been quick to activate is leading a coalition of national organizations to engage Meta against the Palestine censorship we're seeing taking place across Facebook, Instagram and other platforms.

Young people are more powerful than ever before because not only do we have social media, but we literally reside on it. That's our territory. We're constantly innovating new ways to leverage it and making our own rules for what's cool and how to use it. Birkenstock’s New 1774 Collection Is Inspired by Old School New York

Birkenstock is traveling back in time to when New York was the epicenter of experimentation for its 1774 collection. Inspired by the city in the 1970s and '80s, the Spring/Summer 2024 line would've undoubtedly lined the floors of artists as the functional designs arrive in a rich color palette, effortlessly marrying practicality with creativity. The collection is comprised of the classic Birkenstock Boston clog and the new 222 West, which combines the Arizona two-strap sandal and aforementioned Boston. Sex Work and Fashion Are More Closely Linked Than You'd Think

Sex work is the exchange of money or goods for sexual and intimate services, and can include work such as stripping, exchanging sex for money and sugar babying. Like many jobs that require uniforms, sex work is associated with its own aesthetic, one that's meant to elicit sex appeal, sell fantasy and entice clientele, thus creating work.As someone who wasn't always a sex worker, I understand why it's easy for many to ignore the perspective of sex workers while wanting to tap into our style. Unfortunately, shaming sex workers while borrowing elements from their job for fashion design, or the way one dresses, is so normalized. This reminds me of an episode of The musician even experiments with her, in which Carrie Bradshaw complains about the engagement ring her fiancé has chosen for her, and how it's like her "ghetto jewelry." For the show's protagonist, the "ghetto" aesthetic is fun to play with, but it isn't something she wants to be associated with longterm. The reason why appropriating sex work is problematic is that those with an influence are taking from people who are underrepresented, shamed or even imprisoned for simply working. Sex workers battle a number of life-threatening issues daily, and the biggest challenges they face are a lack of safety and security. To put things into perspective, there’s a 45% to 75% chance sex workers will experience violence throughout their careers -- and that doesn't include violence from law enforcement. As sex therapist and former sex worker Raquel Savage writes in a feature for Bitch Media, "Everywhere you look, hoe aesthetics are being appropriated and incorporated into declarations of liberation." One cannot be a true advocate for women and the LGBTQ+ community if their focus on liberation excludes sex workers, the very women whose styles have inspired many fashion trends over the decades.Being inspired is one thing, but not paying homage while pulling elements from one's lifestyle is simply imitation. Is it appropriation or appreciation? One example of the fashion industry appropriating sex work culture is Louis Vuitton's Tue, 26 Mar 2024 16:07:58 +0000, sexual wellness and period advocacy for Gen Z and Millennials rising. Marc Jacobs creative directed the collection and starred in the visual, created for fashion magazine LOVE, but did not hire one sex worker for the gig. Instead, model Cara Delevingne was cast to play the part.At the time, there were many reports about how Louis Vuitton and Jacobs were glamorizing prostitution, but none of these stories discussed the importance of giving back to the very people who were appropriated in the video. Even amid public outrage, sex workers' needs were being overlooked.Contrastingly, Versace's Fall/Winter 1992 collection, titled "Miss S&M" and commonly known as the "Bondage" collection, is a great example of cultural appreciation. The Italian house's founder Gianni Versace had always had a fond appreciation for overt sexuality, and was inspired to pay homage to dominatrixes and fetish-wear. These women risked their safety night by night for low income, and Versace paid respects by elevating their aesthetic into high fashion. The boundary-pushing show remains an iconic fashion moment today, proving that one can reference sex work culture and receive respect for their designs. Even 30 years later, the collection is still making headlines, with Dua Lipa donning one of its dresses to the 2022 Grammys.Objects of appropriationMany staples of sex workers' lifestyle have been appropriated for fashion -- so much so that many don't even think or know to credit sex workers. One of these objects are Pleaser shoes, a brand of heels that cater to strippers. A symbol of eroticism, this style of footwear fully supports the ankle and feet, allowing strippers to climb poles and do floor work safely.Rapper Saweetie is one of Pleaser's celebrity fans, and has worn the brand's towering silhouettes on several occasions to elevate her outfits. It is jarring then, that in her song "My Type," the artist seemingly distances herself from women who perform sex work: "You the type that's f--ckin' for the rent (You a thot)."From full latex dresses to gimp suits, latex is a material that sex workers, specifically dominatrixes, typically wear for their uniforms. Those who engage in BDSM sex work are commonly looked at as "freaks," while those who enjoy using these services are often shamed as well. When used in fashion, however, latex creates shock value and is widely viewed as abstract.Case in point: When Kim Kardashian wore a costume that resembled a gimp suit to the 2021 Met Gala, the reality star-turned-entrepreneur was crowned by numerous publications as one of the event's best dressed celebrities. However, it is unclear whether the SKIMS mogul actually understood the roots of her bondage-inspired look. When it comes to BDSM appreciation done right, an example in recent fashion history would be a set of matching dominatrix and gimp suit looks featured in London-based designer Richard Quinn's Fall/Winter 2022 collection. Fittingly, drag star Violet Chachki, who worked in a dungeon alongside a dominatrix, was tapped to model one of the kinky runway looks. With a special history that most probably aren't familiar with, the G-string is perhaps the most frequently appropriated sex work-related item. The trend of G-strings peeking out of one's clothing originated in the early 20th century by sex workers and burlesque performers, who used that as an added detail of eroticism. At one point, strippers were policed by the authorities for wearing this item, and could receive penalties if caught on the wrong side of town with their G-strings exposed. Over time, the thong has been adopted by major fashion brands and even made its way to the 2019 Met Gala, on a gown worn by Hailey Bieber -- although few media outlets discussed the real influences behind her dress. The bottom lineBeing inspired by sex work is not surprising or wrong, but until sex workers can exist without shame, lack of safety and fear of imprisonment, the appropriation of their lifestyle and aesthetic will continue to be offensive.Admittedly, there's no way to know if designers are former sex workers or patrons revisiting their roots through fashion. After all, it is understandable that people would protect their history in sex work for their own safety. For designers and style enthusiasts who are drawn to the styles associated with sex work culture, the best approach is to educate yourself and others on the history of these garments while enjoying them -- just as Versace did in 1992.This article was originally published on April 7, 2022.

Are There Benefits To Being Boysober? Hypebae Girlies Vote Yes

As we predicted in 2022, a not-so-new sex and dating trend is among us and boy, although few media outlets discussed the real influences behind her dress.Ladies, it's time to welcome "boysober" into the chat, if you haven't already. Coined by comedian Hope Woodard, it refers to her year long break from sex and dating, and as NYTimes stated, it's almost a celibacy This article was originally published on April 7, 2022 Roe v. Wade -- boysober was already becoming a trend, but with less sexy names like "volcel," aka  voluntary celibacy and "femcel." for the girl who wears lingerie just for her.At the time, I wrote an op-ed on why hookup culture was in its "flop era." I proudly wrote, "Sex is great… but with who?" And to be frank, the point still stands. For heterosexual women in the chat, casual sex has long been a double-edged sword. One end delivers -- hopefully -- amazing orgasms, while the other edge leaves you with little choice but to engage with cis heterosexual men who have yet to unlearn the perils of the patriarchy. As we predicted in 2022, a not-so-new sex and dating trend is among us and boy, although few media outlets discussed the real influences behind her dress.

Ladies, it's time to welcome "boysober" into the chat, if you haven't already. Coined by comedian Hope Woodard, it refers to her year long break from sex and dating, and as NYTimes stated, it's almost a celibacy This article was originally published on April 7, 2022 Roe v. Wade -- boysober was already becoming a trend, but with less sexy names like "volcel," aka  voluntary celibacy and "femcel." for the girl who wears lingerie just for her.

At the time, I wrote an op-ed on why hookup culture was in its "flop era." I proudly wrote, "Sex is great… but with who?" And to be frank, the point still stands. For heterosexual women in the chat, casual sex has long been a double-edged sword. One end delivers -- hopefully -- amazing orgasms, while the other edge leaves you with little choice but to engage with cis heterosexual men who have yet to unlearn the perils of the patriarchy. Not wanting to become a "one trick pony"

After semi-securing his dream girl in Gossip Girl and now, stalking women on You, Badgley worried he'd fall into a career trap of only being casted in romantic roles. "I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned it publicly, but one of the main things is, Do I want to put myself back on a career path where I’m always [the] romantic lead,?" Now, the artist is dabbling in all art forms from podcasting to producing, and seems to enjoy the range.

Age gap dynamics:

Badgley is now older than his romantic interests in his series, You, which "Didn’t used to be the case,” he admitted.

His marriage:

“My fidelity in my relationship,” Badgley shared, "It’s important to me. And actually, it was one of the reasons that I initially wanted to turn the role down. I didn’t tell anybody that. But that is why."

Cause f-ck Hollywood:

"Having done a fair amount of them in my career... It’s not a place where I’ve blurred lines,” he spoke of his experience with sex scenes. "There’s almost nothing I could say with more consecration. That aspect of Hollywood has always been very disturbing to me — and that aspect of the job, that mercurial boundary — has always been something that I actually don’t want to play with at all."
