Rei Kawakubo of COMME des GARÇONS is an absolute trailblazer when it comes to collaborations. Consistently breaking barriers and taking designs to the limit, the brand has been known to smash previous silhouettes out of the water and make them as maximalist as possible. However, CDG took a much more subtle approach to their partnership with Converse, and it certainly paid off.
Blurring the lines between high-end and high street, CDG first collaborated with Boston brand, Converse, for the first time in 2009, with a low-top, black iteration of their famous Chuck Taylor All Star silhouette. Unbeknownst to many, CDG actually changed the design further than just sticking a red heart on the side of the sneaker. Other subtle changes included the removal of the stand-out stitching on the upper.
Perhaps more recognisably, the brand then reconvened their partnership with Converse in 2015 and brought out the most-famous iterations that are still flying off the shelves today. Converse re-released the Chuck 70 in 2013, paying tribute to the sneaker that started it all 40 years ago. Coming in a more substantial canvas and premium materials, it's only right that Comme des Garçons PLAY jumped on this silhouette for their next collab.
Vintage off-white hues and monochromatic colour palettes allow for endless styling opportunities, yet present a little more personality than the average pair of Cons. It's no wonder that nearly seven years and many colourways later, the CDG x Converse sneakers - whether they be a high or low top - are as popular as ever.
Year on year, the CDG Play x Converse makes the perfect gift for a loved one. Check out our favourite styles below and links to where you can shop. And from all of us here at JuzsportsShops, we wish you a very merry Christmas. ?
