The Off-White x Nike Terra Forma is set for a December release but as a new silhouette, sneakerheads aren’t sure what to make of it. Designed by none other than the late Virgil Abloh, the Terra Forma is part of a whole host of Nike products in the pipeline that will be released in honour of the king of design. This “White” colourway is part of two shoes dropping at the end of 2022, with the new silhouette having yet to find its mark within sneakerhead culture.
The Terra Forma is unlike any other Virgil x Nike creation we have seen before. This is due to the fact that Virgil constructed the shoe from scratch alongside his strong team of creative designers. Staying true to his unconventional design method, his team described the process behind the shoe as continuous thanks to the fact that “he was always on”, using WhatsApp messages to ensure there was a never-ending creative narrative.
Virgil and the team looked at Rock festivals with this shoe in mind, particularly the Japanese music festival, Fuji Rock. They set about creating a piece of footwear that could protect the wearer at the festival and how that would look if done in the ‘Nike’ way. The shoe looks to the past with a lot of its design language such as the 90s ACG line, an era that saw the Swoosh birth many functional and innovative pieces of design. Virgil, being a lover of the brand’s innovative edge, celebrated this with a number of features such as the spikes on the sole and the zip-up tongue. Throwing in his deconstructive twist, he opted to change the status quo by having the zip-up feature take place underneath the laces, instead of the usual way around.
The staple Off-White design language can also be found through the iconic hang tag as well as the orange square stitched onto the Swoosh. Below, the words “Tread” and “Lightly” are outlined into the tread pattern, allowing the shoe to leave a metaphorical mark on the culture and a physical mark on the ground where you walk. Considering sneakerheads can identify Nike silhouettes based on the soles alone, this was Virgil’s way of ensuring that the tread pattern on the Terra Forma would leave its mark on the culture forever.
